When? Where? But most importantly, Why?

Not to sound egotistical, but ever since I took this profile of myself, it has always intrigued me for several reasons. When ever I photograph a person, place, or an object, most of the time there's a reasoning behind it. Whether its because I like a scenery, a bunch of strong colors, or it captures someone in their most honest form. With this picture, I don't why I took it. But when I think about the other people that see it, they know less than I do.

There's no color, but I know what color shirt I was wearing. I know where I was, but the scene is completely blacked out leaving me staring at a lamp. I know I was alone taking the picture, but how does everyone else know whether or not I was alone, or if the room was full of people.

The pictures itself mirrors a shot from my favorite film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. After the central character Elliot and his siblings witness the alien creature use telekinesis to show where he's from, it frightens Elliot. He walks towards a lamp, stares directly at it as his older brother asks "What is it Elliot?" To which Elliot replies "I don't know, something scary." Right after that line, the aliens arm comes into frame over Elliot's shoulder, which makes me wonder if anyone who sees this picture is going to question "Whats hiding in the darkness?"

Everything about this photograph is a question mark, but thats why its my favorite picture I've ever taken so far. The more people question it, the more timeless it will be.

  1. Great use of the lamp! The entire photo looks sharp and professional. And it certainly did leave me wondering what is lurking in the darkness.
